Understating the VA HISA Grant: Making Homes Safer and More Accessible

Our mission has never felt more personal than it does today. My father-in-law, Ronald Gaulin, proudly served our nation for over 30 years as a Command Master Chief in the United States Navy, dedicating his life to leadership, discipline, and service. Now, as he transitions into a new season of life, we are walking alongside him in making sure his home is safe, accessible, and comfortable.

This journey has reminded us why veteran home modifications are so important. Every ramp, grab bar, wider doorway, and walk-in shower is more than just a construction project — it’s about honoring service with dignity, independence, and care.

Many Veterans, being able to live safely and independently at home is a top priority. The Department of Veteran Affairs offers several programs to support this goal, and one of the most practical is the HISA Grant (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations Grant). At LG2 Services, we’re proud to help our Veteran community learn about this resource and complete home modifications that improve daily life.

What Is the HISA Grant?

The HISA Grant provides funding for medically necessary improvements to a Veteran’s primary residence. Unlike general renovation programs, this grant focuses on changes that directly support health, mobility, and safety.

Examples of covered improvements include:

  • Roll-in or walk-in showers and accessible tubs

  • Wheelchair ramps for entryways

  • Widened doorways for easier mobility

  • Lowered counters, sinks, or cabinets

  • Grab bars, handrails, and relocated electrical outlets

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible, a Veteran must:

  • Be enrolled in the VA health care system

  • Have a VA physician prescribes the home alteration

  • Own or live permanently in the home being modified

The grant amounts are:

  • Up to $6,800 (lifetime cap) for service-connected disabilities

  • Up to $2,000 (lifetime cap) for non-service-connected disabilities

How to Apply

Applying for the HISA Grant involves a few key steps:

  1. Get a VA doctor’s prescription detailing the medical need and type of modification.

  2. Complete VA Form 10-0103 (HISA Grant Application).

  3. Provide proof of home ownership (such as a deed or mortgage statement).

  4. Submit a contractor’s plan and cost estimate for the project.

  5. Send the full package to your local VA Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service office.
